Take your personal practice to the next level

Updated: Feb 20, 2022

We only progress when we challenge ourselves to get out of our comfort zone. Doing the same things day after day is not going to take you any further than you are right now.

Taking your practice to the next level may mean so many things. Maybe you are ready to move on from your home Pilates or yoga studio and start taking classes in a face to face environment where your teacher will make sure you are performing the exercises correctly, providing support or equipment if needed. That could potentially motivate you to work just a tiny bit harder? Also being in a class, you are likely to connect with other like-minded students and feel as a part of community.

It is very common to work through levels in Pilates classes. It is all about progression at the end of the day. Try out all levels available and choose the one that suits you. Use alternatives if needed so you are working on the wright muscles, rather than straining.

I have watched so many of my students progressing over the years, getting stronger, more flexible or mobile. Felt the endorphins at the end of the class and that smile... I believe it is not because the class has finished but because you feel that blissful state of mind, feel your body filled with happiness, the sense of accomplishment. And yes, you should be proud as my classes are not as easy as they look. Each week you take your practice to the next level just by showing up, you are coming into a class with a better understanding of your body, you are more aware of your alignment, you are able to do more and you do more.

How do I take my practice to next level

  1. Work with intention, aim to reach your goals. Set yourself goals... short, medium and long term goals. Remember that you are also working your mind and on some days you may just want to switch off from the day to day responsibilities and enjoy your evening, for example.

  2. Take your practice home with you. To benefit from yoga and Pilates it is recommended to do it at least 3 times a week. That is when you will be able to feel and see the best results. It is tricky sometimes to get into a studio that often so practice at home whenever you find a spare moment.

  3. Have patience. It takes time to improve flexibility, build strength and to correct imbalances and misalignments.

  4. Be consistent. Setting and committing to a regular exercise is absolutely essential if you want to make improvements.
